Rematch left unsettled as Chapman-BCU ends in draw

ORANGE, Calif. – Despite out-shooting its opponent 27-6, the Chapman University men's soccer team could only manage a 2-2 tie against visiting Bethesda Christian University on Monday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers could not avenge a 3-2 loss to Bethesda earlier this month and fell to 3-1-2 at home this season with two matches remaining.

A Bethesda Christian goal from Kevin Salguero with just 6:49 remaining in regulation knotted the game at 2-2 sending it into overtime. Chapman (8-7-2) outshot Bethesda 10-2 in two overtime frames but was left frustrated by GK Hyeokjin Choi who made five of his 10 saves in the extra time.

Chapman was on the attack for most of the game and built leads of 1-0 and 2-1 only to have BCU rally with late goals in each half. Sophomore F Mauricio Alfonso gave the Panthers their first lead of the game in the 31st minute, sending a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper-left corner untouched.

Bethesda Christian tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime when F Cheunyong Park chipped his own free kick over the wall and past Chapman junior GK Jimmy Adranly from just outside the 18.

In the 58th minute, Alfonso scored again on a free kick from the right side when his shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down behind the goal line, giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead. The goal was Alfonso's sixth of the year and the first multi-goal game of his career.

However, Chapman's lead disappeared in the 84th minute when Salguero slipped past the Panthers' defense and knocked in a pass from teammate Ernesto Bello to finish the game's scoring.

The Panthers have won just one of their past four matches (1-2-1) heading into their final two contests of the year. Chapman will host rival U.C. Santa Cruz on Friday at 7 p.m. at Wilson Field. The Banana Slugs are ranked No. 6 in the West Region and won the first meeting between the two teams 3-1 in Santa Cruz in September.
