Men's soccer trio earns All-West Region awards

ORANGE, Calif. – A trio of Chapman University men's soccer players have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-West Region team for 2010. Senior D Cody Mansfield and freshman F Nick Echeverry were named to the second team, while sophomore F Mauricio Alfonso earned third team honors.

Chapman last earned as many as three NSCAA All-Region honorees in 1997. All three players earned the award for the first time in their careers.

Mansfield is also the first Chapman defender to earn All-Region honors in 13 years. He led the Chapman defense to a 1.33 goals-against average and seven shutouts as the team's center back and team captain. The senior led the team with over 1,600 minutes while playing in all 19 games.

The rookie Echeverry becomes the first Panther freshman to be named to the All-West Region team since Chapman moved to Division III in 1994. Echeverry had a standout season leading Chapman in goals (7), assists (4) and shots on goal (24). He is one of just four freshmen in the entire West to earn a selection to any of the three regional teams.

Alfonso was Chapman's second-leading goal scorer with six goals and finished third on the team with 12 total points. His four game winning goals are the most for any Panther since 2002 and fell just one shy of the school record.
