Quick strike by Echeverry gives Chapman 1-0 win over UPS

ORANGE, Calif. – A goal by sophomore F Nick Echeverry just 19 seconds into the game gave the Chapman University men's soccer team a 1-0 home-opening win over the University of Puget Sound on  Sunday night at Wilson Field.

Chapman (2-0) quickly controlled the ball getting it to junior F Mauricio Alfonso breaking down the left wing. Alfonso then lobbed the ball just in front of the goal to Echeverry who headed the ball in the top right corner of the net. The duo each now has a goal and an assist in the early season. Echeverry attempted a team-high five shots, including two on goal.

Puget Sound (0-2) then settled in and played Chapman even the rest of the evening. Both teams attempted 11 shots in the game. The Loggers outshot Chapman 9-2 in the first half but the tide reversed in the second half as Chapman outshot Puget Sound 8-3 in the final 45 minutes.

Both of the Loggers shots in the second half came in the final few minutes, including a potential game-tying shot by sophomore M Matthew Durland which sailed high as time expired. Junior GK Chris McDonald had a pair of saves for the Loggers.

The goalkeeping duo of senior Jimmy Adranly and junior Pedro Velasquez recorded the shutout for Chapman without tallying a save because Puget Sound did not put a shot on goal.
