Balanced effort leads to 4-0 win over Cal Lutheran

ORANGE, Calif. – A second-half scoring outburst by the Chapman University men's soccer team helped to secure a 4-0 victory over visiting Cal Lutheran University on Monday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers scored three goals in a 10 minute span to improve to 6-1 this season.

Chapman is now a perfect 6-0 against Division III opponents with five of those wins coming against the West Region. The Panthers travel to Texas this weekend for a showdown against No. 5-ranked Trinity University on Saturday.

The game was scoreless until the 37th minute when, following a corner kick, the Panthers took three consecutive shots from within the goalie box. After the first two attempts were blocked by Cal Lutheran defenders, freshman MF Nick O'Brien found the back of the net for his first career goal. It proved to be the game-winner.

With Chapman leading 1-0 at halftime, sophomore F Nick Echeverry gave Chapman some breathing room when he scored his fourth goal of the season off a direct kick from just outside the 18-meter box to put the Panthers up 2-0 in the 69th minute.

The second half was all Panthers. Chapman out-shot the Kingsmen 14-3 over the final 45 minutes and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. One of the Panthers' three second-half goals came off a corner kick, when sophomore MF Devon Schmidt scored his first goal of the year following a deflection by a Cal Lutheran player in the 77th minute. Two minutes later junior MF Dylan Taschner scored on a pass from junior F Colin Heim to give Chapman a 4-0 cushion.

Senior GK Jimmy Adranly remained unscored upon this season making two saves in goal. Adranly's biggest save of the night came on penalty kick in the 86th minute when the senior dove to his right to deflect a shot by Kingsmen Timo Ros and preserve his third shutout of the year.

The Panthers have kept a clean sheet in five of their seven matches and lowered their team goals-against average to 0.55 overall. Chapman has out-scored its opponents 17-4 this season.
