Season-opener spoiled as Hope International pulls out 2-0 win

ORANGE, Calif. –  For 80 minutes, the Chapman University men's soccer team played a strong game defensively. But a 10 minute stretch in the second half proved to be costly as Chapman gave up a pair of goals to drop its season-opener 2-0 to Hope International University Friday evening at Wilson Field.

In the 63rd minute, Chapman (0-1) freshman GK Nick Berardi fouled Hope International's senior M Matthew Howard in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Howard capitalized on the opportunity for Hope with a goal into the left corner of the net. Then in 73rd minute, Howard gave Hope International (4-0) some breathing room with his second score of the night and seventh goal of the young season.

Chapman had numerous opportunities, primarily in the first half, outshooting Hope International 6-3 in the half. Senior F Mauricio Alfonso and freshman M Gino Belhassen each attempted three shots for Chapman but Hope's defense and its senior GK Jhovany Hernandez kept Chapman at bay. Hernandez had three saves for Hope International.

The Panthers now have eight days off before their next match which is on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. as the team hosts Whitman College on Wilson Field.
