Double overtime not enough as Chapman ties Redlands 1-1

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University men's soccer team narrowly escaped with a 1-1 double overtime tie vs. the University of Redlands on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field. Redlands got several opportunities to win the game in the closing minutes of the second overtime, but could not find the net as Chapman's defense and freshman GK Dean Meltz turned Redlands away.

With 3:46 remaining in the second overtime, Redlands' senior F Noah Prudhomme got a one-on-one opportunity with Meltz, but missed with a shot off the right post. Perhaps the Bulldogs' best opportunity came with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game as a header by senior F Alex Laughton was blocked and then Meltz saved a shot by junior D Richie Marquez as time expired.

For much of the match, the game remained scoreless but in the 65th minute Redlands (2-2-2, 2-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Marquez off a corner kick by sophomore M Matej Kustura. Then in the 71st minute, Chapman (2-3-1, 1-1-1) tied the game on a goal by senior F Mauricio Alfonso off a direct kick just over the outstretched hands of the Redlands keeper and under the crossbar. Alfonso now has four goals which is tops on the team and is tied for the SCIAC lead.

Redlands' junior GK Andreas Silva finished with five saves while Meltz had six for Chapman. In a tightly contested match, Redlands outshot Chapman 20-19 on the evening.
