Back in the win column after 4-0 victory over La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University men's soccer team used goals from four different players to run away with a 4-0 victory over the University of La Verne on Saturday night at Wilson Field, ending Chapman's three game winless streak. Chapman scored two more goals tonight than the team had scored in its three previous outings.

In the 20th minute, freshman M Boston Kimmel got Chapman (3-3-1, 2-1-1) on the board with a goal from the right wing after evading a La Verne defender.  Three minutes later, sophomore D Mikey Stoddard scored his second goal over the last three games to push the lead to 2-0.

La Verne (3-5-1, 1-4-0) had numerous opportunities in the game, putting 12 shots on goal, but the freshmen GK duo of Nick Berardi and Dean Meltz had eight and four saves, respectively. Berardi got his first win of the season after starting in place of Meltz and played 66 minutes. Junior M Fernando Almejo and sophomore M Boye Christiansen each attempted a team-high four shots for La Verne, putting two shots and three shots on goal, respectively.

In the second half, Chapman built on its lead with a goal by freshman M Jared Stephens who headed the ball in off a corner kick from junior M Nick Velasquez who had the assist in the 51st minute. Senior F Mauricio Alfonso concluded Chapman's scoring in the 86th minute with a header into the back of the net off a breakaway assist from sophomore D Josh Hale.

Chapman now hits the road for matches at Claremont and Caltech before returning home on Saturday night to host Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m.
