Yepez, Cal Lutheran too much as Chapman drops match 5-1

ORANGE, Calif. –  Senior F Raul Yepez scored two goals and added an assist as visiting Cal Lutheran ran away with a 5-1 win over the Chapman University men's soccer team on Saturday night at Wilson Field. The loss drops Chapman to 3-3-1 at home this season and gives Cal Lutheran a leg up in the SCIAC standings. With the win, Cal Lutheran jumps to third in the SCIAC standings while Chapman drops to sixth, a game and a half behind.

Yepez got Cal Lutheran (6-4, 4-2) on the board in the 25th minute as he scored on a breakaway after winning a free ball. Freshman M Boston Kimmel answered for Chapman with a goal off a rebound in the 35th minute to even the score at 1-1. Kimmel's rebound and shot came off a shot by sophomore M Duncan Capriotti who earned an assist on the play for Chapman (4-5-1, 3-3-1).

Just under five minutes after Kimmel tied the game, Yepez got loose and scored his second goal of the night, this time in 40th minute to give Cal Lutheran a 2-1 lead before halftime. Junior GK Rey Rivera-Ramos held Chapman scoreless for the remainder of the game as did Cal Lutheran's defense as they allowed just four shots in the second half.

After halftime, Cal Lutheran took command and scored three more goals against Chapman's defense and freshman GK Dean Meltz  who did have six saves on the night. The goals came in the 73rd, 84th and 85th minute but it was the back-to-back goals by junior D Ivan Sanchez and junior MF Bryce Truver less than a minute apart that was the back-breaker for Chapman.

Chapman was playing without the services of senior F Mauricio Alfonso who is also the kicker for the Chapman football team which had a game against Whittier College at the same time. Chapman now hits the road for a pair of SCIAC matches before returning home on Oct. 10 to host Pomona-Pitzer at 4 p.m.
