Caltech keeps it close but Chapman prevails 2-0

ORANGE, Calif. –  For 53 minutes Caltech hung around, but a pair of second half goals gave the Chapman University men's soccer team a 2-0 win on Saturday night at Wilson Field and kept the team's SCIAC postseason tournament hopes alive. Chapman (7-8-1, 6-6-1) sits a half game behind Whittier for the fourth and final playoff.

The game remained scoreless in the first half despite Chapman outshooting Caltech (0-15, 0-14) 11-4, in large part because of the goalie play of senior GK Wesley Swank who had eight saves on the night including a few in the first half for Caltech.

In the 54th minute, Chapman got its first goal of the game when sophomore M Duncan Capriotti scored on a header off a corner from junior F Nick Echeverry. Less than 15 minutes later, Chapman scored an insurance goal when Echeverry scored off an assist from sophomore F Gabe Recht-Appel.

Caltech attempted seven shots on the night with four coming in the second half but were unable to put a shot on goal. Junior M Thomas Kwok attempted a team-high two shots for Caltech.

Chapman returns to play at home on Monday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in a SCIAC match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while Caltech hits the road to face Whittier, also on Monday.
