First half deficit too much to overcome in 4-1 loss to loss to CMS

ORANGE, Calif. –  A four-goal first half put the Chapman University men's soccer team in a hole it couldn't recover from as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came away with a 4-1 win on Monday night at Wilson Field. The loss dims Chapman's SCIAC postseason tournament chances as the team now sits behind Whittier for the final spot with two matches to play.

In the 8th minute CMS (10-5-2, 9-4-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore M Jake Bishop off an assist from senior F Harrison Doyle. Just under four minutes later, senior M Jared Bernstein pushed the lead to 2-0 when he scored from right in front of the net off an assist from sophomore M Jake Bishop. The assist for Bishop was his first of two on the night as he also had an assist on sophomore D Daniel Beer's goal in the 29th minute.

With a 3-0 lead, less than 30 seconds after Beer scored, freshman M Hogan Marhoefer scored from deep outside the box on the right wing at the 29:23 mark of the first half. CMS outshot Chapman 12-3 in the first half and 17-8 in the game.

Chapman (7-9-1, 6-7-1) got its lone goal in the 70th minute when senior F Mauricio Alfonso scored off a direct kick to narrow CMS's lead to 4-1. Alfonso attempted four shots on the night, three of which were saved by CMS sophomore GK Daniel Roberts who had four on the night.

Freshman GK Nick Berardi played the second half for Chapman in net and kept CMS off the board and collected one save.

Chapman hits the road to face Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and then returns home to Wilson Field on Saturday for Senior Day at 11 a.m. against Occidental to close out the SCIAC regular season. CMS plays Whittier on the road and then is home against Cal Lutheran in its last two games.
