Five-year offensive high lifts Chapman to first SCIAC win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team equaled the most goals it's scored in a match in the past four seasons, tallying five scores in a 5-1 win over Caltech in the Panthers' SCIAC opener at Wilson Field on Monday night. The Panthers scored five goals against Hope International last season; the most they've scored in a game since 2008. Chapman has now scored eight goals in its past two games.

Chapman (2-1 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) got the scoring starting right away as sophomore M Boston Kimmel netted the Panthers' first goal just 98 seconds into the game on an assist from sophomore F Karam Gill. It was Kimmel's third goal in Chapman's last two games. The two then connected just four minutes later as Kimmel this time fed a pass to Gill who finished for his first career goal, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead just six minutes into the contest.

The newest Panther, Cameron Waymire – who just joined the roster last week – got into the action off the bench later in the half. Waymire scored the first of two goals in the game in the 29th minute to put Chapman ahead 3-0 going into halftime.

Caltech (0-3 overall, 0-1 SCIAC) sophomore M Alec Sands got the Beavers on the scoreboard with a goal in the 63rd minute, but Waymire and the Panthers answered back with a goal less than four minutes later on an assist from Kimmel.

For good measure, Gill added his second goal of the game in the 83rd minute to give Chapman its final margin of 5-1. Three games into the season the Panthers already have three players who have earned multi-goal games: Waymire and Gill on Monday, joining Kimmel (Saturday vs. UC Santa Cruz).

Chapman has now won its SCIAC opener two years in a row and will continue conference play on Wednesday as the Panthers play host to Cal Lutheran at Wilson Field at 4 p.m.
