Missed opportunities frustrate Panthers in 3-1 loss to Cal Lu

ORANGE, Calif. – Two days after matching a school record with five goals, the Chapman University men's soccer team failed to convert on several prime opportunities, dropping a 3-1 match to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday at Wilson Field. The Panthers tallied 18 shots in the match, but multiple shots off the posts told the heartbreaking story as their two-game win streak came to an abrupt end.

The Kingsmen dominated possession in the first half, taking an early lead as F Matt Hubbard scored off an assist from F Cameron Rude in the fifth minute. The Panthers came alive in the final 10 minutes of the half, but failed to convert on two close-range opportunities.  M Gino Belassen and M Karam Gill both saw their shots go off the post before being gobbled up by Cal Lu GK Jack Duncan, who finished the match with four saves.

Chapman began the second half on the attack, taking five straight shots but missing on each opportunity. The Panthers finally broke through, following a Cal Lu goal from Salvador Orozco, as F Nick Echeverry buried Chapman's only goal on a fast break in the 67th minute.

Echeverry's first goal of the season also marked the first allowed by Cal Lu in over six halves of play. The Kingsmen entered the game having held their opponents scoreless since the second half of their season-opener.

Trailing 2-1, the Panthers had consecutive corner kick chances in the 79th and 80th minute, but came up empty. A deflection on the second corner kick led to a fast break opportunity that helped Cal Lu put the game on ice as Julian Hernandez put one past Chapman GK Nick Berardi in the 82nd minute.

The Panthers will play their next four games away from Wilson Field, traveling to Colorado to take on Colorado College and the University of Dallas before returning to California for two road SCIAC matches against Claremont-M-S and La Verne.
