Men's soccer battles its way to 1-1 tie with Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – Hoping to put an end to a two-game losing skid, the Chapman University men's soccer team was forced to settle for the next best thing on Wednesday night, finishing in a 1-1 tie in double overtime with the Whittier College Poets at Wilson Field.

The Panthers held off a Poets offense that outshot them 22-10 in the contest, with sophomore GK Nick Berardi making eight saves in 110 minutes. Berardi's biggest save of the match came with some help from the goal post as Whittier's Ian Cromwell hit the post on a wide-open opportunity in the 102nd minute, sending the ball straight into the hands of Berardi. The Poets stayed on the attack in the second overtime period, but failed to convert on four shot attempts before the clock hit zero.

The Panthers controlled possession early in the contest, taking seven shots in the first half to Whittier's four. The sole Panthers goal came in the 35th minute from sophomore M Boston Kimmel, who netted his third goal of the season to move into a tie with Nick Echeverry for the team lead in points with eight.

The second half belonged to the Poets, who outshot the Panthers 9-1, including the equalizer by defender Francis Maxwell in the 65th minute. Following the match-tying goal, Whittier went on to take the final five shots in regulation but each failed to find the net, sending the game into overtime at 1-1.

The Panthers will be back on the pitch this Saturday looking for their first home win since Sept. 9 as they play host to the Redlands Bulldogs on Wilson Field at 1 p.m.
