Overtime goal lifts Cal Lu over men's soccer in SCIAC final

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A Cal Lutheran goal six minutes into sudden death overtime, spelled sudden death for the Chapman University men's soccer team as the host Kingsmen earned the SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship with the 1-0 win at Rolland Stadium on Saturday night.

With the win the SCIAC Tournament's No. 3-seed Cal Lutheran (13-6-2) earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs while No. 4-seed Chapman must wait for a possible at-large bid into the tournament. The NCAA announces its playoff field on Monday morning. Both teams reached the conference final by virtue of upset wins in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Cal Lu's Thiago Gaglianone scored the game-winner in the 96th minute, unassisted to end a scoreless tie and give the Kingsmen the win.

Chapman (12-8-2) out-shot Cal Lutheran 14-13, including an 8-5 advantage in the second half. The Panthers forced Kingsmen GK Jack Duncan to make six saves in 96 minutes in goal. Panthers' F Nick Echeverry led the team with six shots, including two on goal.

Chapman sophomore GK Nick Berardi made three saves before suffering the defeat.
