Men's soccer locks up No. 2 seed with Senior Day win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team came into Senior Day looking to lock up second place and the Panthers (12-5-3, 11-4-1 SCIAC) did just that with a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer. With the win, the Panthers will host a SCIAC semifinal on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Chapman and La Verne ended the season tied with 32 points but Chapman owns the tiebreaker and will host the SCIAC semifinal as the No. 2 seed. The other side of the bracket features No. 4 Occidental at No. 1 Redlands.

Chapman got on the board early with senior Boston Kimmel celebrating Senior Day with his seventh goal of the season. A give-and-go between junior Marco Saglimbeni and junior Daniel Malikyar in the third minute led to Saglimbeni's cross into the box that found Kimmel's foot and the back of the net.

The Panthers dominated possession and held the Sagehens (8-9-3, 8-7-1 SCIAC) to a single shot in the first half that resulted in an easy save for senior Nick Berardi.

The second half featured much of the same with the Panthers creating the most opportunities. Junior Cole Peters made the most of one of those opportunities in the 61st minute when he buried a beautiful cross from junior Jake Sarmiento.

The Sagehens tallied a late goal when they were awarded a penalty kick, which Voja Maric buried.

The Panthers are in the SCIAC Tournament for the third year in a row and will host a match in the postseason tournament for the first time in school history. The match is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
