Men’s soccer earns third straight win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team earned its third consecutive win with a 4-1 victory over Whittier tonight at Wilson Field. Senior Elliot Braund led the Panthers' scoring with a pair of goals.

The Panthers settled into their possession game early in the match. Chapman struck in the 27th minute when they were awarded a throw-in at the opposing 10-yard line. Senior Lorenzo Belassen threw the ball to sophomore Jarod Matteoni, who flicked the ball to a waiting Braund. The senior headed the ball into the back of the net, putting the Panthers up 1-0.

Chapman found the back of the net again seven minutes later. This time, freshman Patrick Quinn rocketed the ball into the back of the net after it bounced around in the box. The rookie cleaned up the mess, placing the ball in the side netting and putting the Panthers up 2-0 going into halftime.

The Panthers found the back of the net two more times. Braund struck again in the 63rd minute, having no trouble blasting the ball past Whittier's goalkeeper to extend Chapman's lead.

Senior Niko Arellanes was the next to score, cleaning up another loose ball in the box. Arellanes found the ball at his feet and snuck it past the keeper into the back of the net.

With less than two minutes left in the match, the Poets were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Devin O'Donnell placed his shot past the outstretched arms of Panther goalkeeper Matt Deemer, who replaced fellow senior Sean Augustine in the 68th minute. The score remained 4-1 as the referee blew the final whistle.

Chapman travels to Santa Cruz and Redlands for its next two matches, but returns home to Wilson Field on Saturday, Sept. 30 to take on Caltech.
