Men’s and women’s soccer recognized for academic excellence

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's soccer teams were both recognized today, Oct. 5, for their academic excellence as the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) announced its annual Team Academic Award Winners. Out of 816 total collegiate teams (283 men, 533 women) the Panthers were one of 197 schools that had both its men's and women's programs recognized.

The men, under head coach Eddie Carrillo, posted a team GPA of 3.06 in the 2016-17 academic school year. Eight of the members of the 2016-17 team were also named to the SCIAC All-Academic Team, which means they earned a GPA of 3.4 or above in the previous academic school year.

This is the first time in program history that the men's soccer team has been eligible for this award since it was instituted in 1996.

The women's program was also recognized for its excellence in the classroom. Under head coach Courtney Calderon the team posted a GPA of 3.36 in the 2016-17 academic school year. In addition to this United Soccer Coaches award, the women's soccer team had 18 players named to the SCIAC All-Academic Team. This means that 72% of the squad achieved a GPA of 3.4 or higher in the 2016-17 academic school year.

The women's program has earned the Team Academic Award five of the last seven years and eight times total since 1996.

College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster.
