Raymond nets game-winner in final minutes

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team narrowly edged out the visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags 2-1 in the final minutes of today's match. Sophomore Charlie Raymond tapped the game-winner into the back of the net, leading the Panthers to victory all while recording his first career goal.

The first goal of the game came in the 41st minute from the senior duo of Elliott Braund and Zev Gollis, who each lead the team in goals and assists, respectively. Senior goalkeeper Sean Augustine found Gollis off a free kick, who played Braund in behind the defense. Braund got to the ball just before sophomore goalkeeper Connor Gaskin, one touching the ball past him to net the first score.

With just 10 minutes left to play in the game, sophomore Justin Gadalla curled the ball off a one-time pass from fellow sophomore Patrick Burke into the right side netting past an outstretched Augustine, tying the score at one.

Chapman struck right back less than three minutes later, as junior Kai Howe found Raymond streaking behind the defense, who tapped the ball past Gaskin with just under 7 minutes left to play in the game. The Panthers held on to the newcomer's game-winning goal, coming away with a 2-1 victory over the Stags.

Chapman peppered Gaskin with eight shots on goal, forcing the goalkeeper to make six saves in the 90 minutes of play. Augustine saw six shots on goal, recording five saves throughout the match.

It proved to be a physical match, as Claremont-M-S was awarded three yellow cards while the Panthers were awarded five. The Stags recorded 17 fouls and Chapman tallied 16 for a total of 33 fouls in the 90-minute match.

Chapman heads to Whittier this weekend but returns home to face La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. for its final home game of the regular season.
