Men’s soccer wins 1-0 on senior night

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team clinched a spot in the SCIAC Tournament tonight with a 1-0 senior night win over La Verne. Junior Kai Howe netted the sole goal of the match, sending the Panther seniors off on a high note.

Chapman (9-4-3, 9-2-1 SCIAC) and La Verne (7-7-2, 4-6-2 SCIAC) were scoreless throughout the first half despite even chances on goal. The Panthers took five shots in the first 45 minutes of play, forcing junior Josh Ramirez to make one save. Senior Sean Augustine was tested twice in the first half, tallying two saves.

A tackle from behind by senior Auden Foxe in the 23rd minute led to a red card, forcing the Leopards to play with 10 men for the remaining 67 minutes of the match.

Chapman gained control of possession in the second half, falling into their groove. The Panthers ripped 11 shots in the second half of play, outshooting La Verne 11-2.

The only Chapman player to find the back of the net was Howe, when he settled a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and ripped a low shot, putting the Panthers up 1-0 with 35 minutes left to play in the game.

Augustine racked up two more saves in the second half on the Leopards' only two shots of the half, giving him four saves on the match.

Chapman held on to the lead despite a couple of late-game opportunities for La Verne. The Panthers have now posted six wins in a row, five of those coming as shutouts.

Chapman heads to Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer for its last two games of the regular season.
