Men’s soccer ranked No. 2 in SCIAC preseason polls

The Chapman University men's soccer squad enters the 2018 season at the No. 2 spot in the SCIAC preseason poll after making an appearance in the SCIAC semifinal match last year.

The Panthers finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 9-7-3 (9-4-1 SCIAC) and a third place finish in the SCIAC standings. After graduating eight seniors, Chapman looks to its 16 newcomers to replace last year's core lineup, including three freshmen goalkeepers who will be battling for a spot to help the Panthers become untouchable in front of the net.

The Panthers return just a few of their 2017 starting lineup. Senior forward and All-SCIAC First Teamer Kai Howe looks to help the Panthers' offense after scoring six goals and tallying two assists last year.

Anchoring the back line this season is junior defender and All-SCIAC Second Teamer Jarod Matteoni. The team captain will lead the Panthers' unique defensive line as they look to make a return to the postseason tournament. Senior captain Nick Rooney will also be a key player on the back line after appearing in 18 games and recording an assist in the 2017 season.

Chapman also looks to a couple of juniors to control the middle of the pitch. Jonah Tipp and Justo Garcia make their return this year after appearing in 19 and 15 games, respectively, in the 2017 season.

The Panthers kick off their season with a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. where they face Whitman College at 12pm on Friday, Aug. 31 and Colorado College at 12:30pm on Sunday, Sept. 2.
