Howe brothers team up for double OT win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team won a thrilling double overtime match over the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes earlier this afternoon. Here's Howe.

Freshman Tobi Howe and his brother, senior Kai Howe, teamed up to lead the Panthers to victory with just over three minutes left to play in the second overtime. Tobi found his brother on the edge of the 18-yard box after a Chapman counter attack. Kai took a touch to set himself up, then hit a rocket to the lower left side netting, sending the Panther bench onto the field in celebration.

Rewind 102 minutes and Chapman strikes first and early. Kai Howe slotted a ball to a wide open junior Justo Garcia down the sideline. Garcia served the ball to a streaking Ryan Onart who was able to find the back of the net with a defender right on his back.

The Lutes countered with a goal of their own less than 12 minutes later. After a string of passes across the pitch, Pacific Lutheran's senior Joe Sammartino found himself 1v1 with freshman goalkeeper Jaxson Thornton. Sammartino took a touch and slotted the ball into the back of the net to even the score at one.

The Panthers and Lutes went scoreless in the second half, with each team taking six shots.

After nearly 17 minutes of golden-goal overtime play, the Howe brothers struck to give Chapman their third win of the 2018 season.

Thornton earned his first start of his college career, posting two saves in 45 minutes of play. Sophomore Chandler Siemonsma played the second half and both overtimes, tallying one save and earning his second win of the season.

Junior Jarod Matteoni was a force for the Panthers on the back line, playing all 107 minutes while keeping the Lutes out of Chapman's own half.

The Panthers return home to Wilson Field on Saturday, Sept. 15 to host Occidental at 7pm.
