Men’s soccer falls in double overtime

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the visiting University of Redlands Bulldogs 9-3, 7-2 SCIAC) in double overtime earlier this evening.

The two sides battled back and forth throughout the 90 minutes of regulation. The Panthers (7-6, 5-5 SCIAC) rattled off 19 shots, forcing Bulldog goalkeeper Matt DeFina to make five saves. On the other side of the pitch, Redlands fired 17 shots, hitting the frame a total of seven times.

After a scoreless regulation and first overtime period, the two sides headed into the final golden-goal overtime. After a Chapman attack was stopped by the Bulldogs' defense, Redlands countered hard. After senior Kayvon Parsa received the ball down the left sideline, he found fellow senior Arman Mogharei at the top of the 18-yard box. Mogharei hit a one-time shot that knuckled just past the outstretched arms of freshman Jaxson Thornton to give the Bulldogs the victory.

Senior Kai Howe took 12 shots in the match, putting four of them on frame. Howe and junior Patrick Quinn were the only Panthers to tally shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Chandler Siemonsma started the match for Chapman, recording three saves in 29 minutes of play. Thornton entered in the 30th minute, tallying four saves in his 74 minutes of action.

The Panther defense blocked five of the Bulldogs' 17 shots. Junior Jarod Matteoni, freshman Connor McLane and Quinn each played the full 104-minute match.

The Panthers return to Wilson Field on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:30pm to host UC Santa Cruz in the second match of a Chapman soccer doubleheader.
