Five Panthers honored on All-SCIAC teams

ORANGE, Calif. – Five members of the Chapman University men's soccer team were honored by the SCIAC earlier this morning. Senior Kai Howe and junior Jonah Tipp earned First Team accolades while juniors Jarod Matteoni and Patrick Quinn were selected to the Second Team. Senior captain Nick Rooney was awarded the SCIAC Award of Distinction for his work on and off the field.

This is Howe's second consecutive First Team selection after scoring five goals in the 2017 season. The striker led the Panthers with four goals and four assists against conference opponents. Three of those four goals came as game-winners for the Tokyo, Japan native. Howe was a force on offense for the Panthers, rattling off 34 shots against SCIAC teams.

Tipp was a constant presence for the Panthers in the midfield, playing in every SCIAC match this season. The Woodland Hills native's lone goal of the season came off a header against Whittier in Chapman's first SCIAC match of the 2018 season. Tipp helped the Panthers maintain possession in the midfield, helping them to an 8-6 conference record and a No. 4 seed in the postseason tournament.

Matteoni is no stranger to the All-SCIAC Second Team. This is the defenders second consecutive All-SCIAC selection after starting in 12 matches against conference opponents. The San Jose native scored two goals and dished out one assist, all against SCIAC teams. Matteoni added a helping hand in getting the Panthers to the postseason, scoring the game-winning goal against La Verne in a week where the Panthers needed positive results. He anchored the back line, helping Chapman to four shutouts and a team 1.07 goals-against average.

This is Quinn's first All-SCIAC selection after starting every SCIAC match this season. The junior anchored the back line with Mattoeni, holding SCIAC opponents to just 14 goals. Both of the Menlo Park native's goals came against Whittier, once at home and once at the Poets. Two of the four defensive positions on the Second Team went to Matteoni and Quinn, proving just how dominant the Panthers' back line was this season.

The Award of Distinction recognizes a men's soccer athlete for exemplary achievements through their higher education experience. Rooney is a two-time SCIAC All-Academic selection and puts all of his effort on and off the field. The list of accomplishments for the Lake Oswego, Ore. native goes on, highlighted by a two-time All-SCIAC Academic Team selection and a finalist standing as Chapman's Most Outstanding Junior Award.
