Garcia nets a pair in Panthers’ 3-0 win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman men's soccer team bounced back from a season-opener loss to beat the visiting Pacific University Boxers 3-0 earlier this afternoon. Senior Justo Garcia led the way for the Panthers, netting two of the three goals.

Sophomore Aidan Wall scored his second goal in just as many games in the 16th minute. The striker collected a ball from fellow classmate Tobi Howe inside the 18-yard box and curled it just past the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into the back of the net to give Chapman a 1-0 lead.

Garcia scored his first goal of the match when he drew a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 29th minute. The midfielder stepped up to take the penalty, driving it low into the middle of the goal as Boxer goalkeeper Jack Cuevas dove to the left.

Garcia netted his second goal less than two minutes into the second half. Freshman Chris Sanchez played a low driven ball into the box from the right side of the field and Garcia one-timed it into the back of the net to give Chapman its final 3-0 lead.

The Panthers maintained possession for the rest of the game and out-possessed Pacific 64 percent to 36 percent. Chapman also rattled off 18 shots, forcing Cuevas to make three saves in just under 60 minutes played. Senior Jack Orum relieved Cuevas after an hour and tallied two saves for himself.

Sophomore Chandler Siemonsma earned the start in goal, tallying one save in 72 minutes played. Junior Gianluca Torgerson replaced Siemonsma in the 73rd minute for his first appearance of the 2019 season.

The Panthers take a week off before hosting Hope International on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. at Wilson Field.
