ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Aidan Wall opened the season with a hat trick to lead the Chapman University men's soccer team to a 6-3 season-opening win over visiting Carroll on Friday. Fellow senior Tobi Howe scored a pair of goals in the first half as well.
The Panthers (1-0-0) scored their most goals in a single match since 2017 when they beat Caltech 6-0. Wall led the way on Friday with his second career hat trick, becoming just the fourth Panther to record multiple hat tricks in his career in Chapman's Division III era. He also recorded his first career assist to make it a seven-point night – one shy of Scott Martino's school record for points in a game.
Junior Sebastian Hertel was also just short of a Scott Martino record, assisting on three of the Panthers' goals.
Howe put the Panthers up early with a pair of goals less than four minutes a part. He knocked in Wall's cross with his right foot from just outside the six-yard box. Less than four minutes, Carroll's keeper played a ball directly to Hertel. Hertel played it right back into the box where a waiting Howe swept in into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Hertel set up another goal three minutes later when he drove all the way to the end line and found Wall waiting in the box to push n Chapman's third goal. Wall later scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and completed his hat trick on another pass from Hertel in the 65th minute.
Wall's last two goals helped Chapman pull away as Marti Solanellas Vilella brough the Pioneers back within a goal. He took on the defense and scored in the 33rd minute for his first goal. Less than a minute into the second half, he found himself open on the far post and scored from 10 yards out to make it 3-2.
The completed hat trick from Wall pushed the lead back to 5-2 and Jonah Friang added an insurance goal with just one minute remaining. Chandler Siemonsma made five saves before Victor Jacinto finished out the last 11 minutes in goal.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow at Vanguard before returning home for a 1:30 p.m. match against Bethesda.
