Panthers win and lose on a busy Saturday

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team split a home doubleheader on Saturday, defeating visiting St. John's University (Minn.) 7-2 at the Chapman Tennis Courts before being shutout by Cal Lutheran University 9-0 in the nightcap at Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

The Panthers opened the match with a doubles sweep thanks to tiebreak 9-8 victory by sophomores Andre Herd and Kevin Smyth in the No. 2 match. The duo improved to 2-2 this season with the win.

Chapman (2-3) then took care of business in singles play with wins on four of the six courts, including junior Dylan Tevlin getting his first win as the Panthers' No. 1 seed this season. Tevlin won in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, improving to 4-4 overall. Freshman Kyle Coates earned a three sets win on Court #4 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 for his second straight win.

Cal Lutheran 9, Chapman 0
The No. 20-ranked Kingsmen handed the Panthers their first shutout of the season after straight sets wins in all six singles matches on Saturday. Tevlin and Coates each lost for just the second time this spring. Tevlin and senior Alex Klein fell to 2-3 this season with an 8-5 loss in the No. 1 doubles match as well.
