Men's tennis sweeps Biola to start spring

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team opened up its 2014 spring campaign with a perfect outing resulting in a 9-0 win over visiting Biola University on Friday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The Panthers set the tone early with three closely-contested wins in doubles and then knocked off the Eagles with a clean sweep in singles play.

Junior No. 1 singles player Justin Thompson rallied back after losing the second set to beat Biola's top player Lucas Lee 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Chapman's 2-5 seeds disposed of their opponents in straight sets. Senior Troy Akin won the first set on the No. 2 court 6-1, but needed a tiebreaker to complete the win 7-6 (7-4) over Isaiah Pekary.

In doubles play, Akin teamed with sophomore Brett Buford to upset NAIA's No. 24-ranked Lee and Tayven Townsend 8-6. The Panthers' freshmen duo of Charlie Werman and Sam Mittledorf teamed to beat Pekary and Luke Mountain from Biola in the No. 2 doubles match, 9-7. Also, Thompson and Chapman sophomore Hunter Morris needed a ninth game to decide their match on the third court, winning 9-7.

The Panthers return to the court on Sunday to host Arizona Christian University in another non-conference meeting, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
