Doubles sweep helps men's tennis snap skid

ORANGE, Calif. – Welcoming in a host of non-conference opponents over the next two weeks, the Chapman University men's tennis team got off the schneid on Wednesday with a 6-3 win over visiting University of Rochester (N.Y.) at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The win snapped the Panthers' three-game losing streak after a tough 5-4 loss to Vassar College (N.Y.) on Monday.

Vassar 5, Chapman 4

Vassar turned a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win thanks to victories on the Nos. 5 and 6 courts on Monday. The straight sets wins helped the Brewers come back after Chapman took three of the top four singles matches, including a 6-1, 6-2 win by Panthers' junior Justin Thompson on the No. 1 court. Sophomore Brett Buford improved to 5-0 from the No. 3 position with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

Vassar (6-4) also jumped up on Chapman early, taking two of three doubles matches to begin the match. Panthers' No. 1 duo of Buford and senior Troy Akin earned the team's lone doubles win 9-7.

Chapman 6, Rochester 3

A doubles sweep by Chapman (4-3) led to a decisive win over visiting Rochester (6-4). Akin and Buford improved to 4-2 this season with an 8-3 win on the No. 1 court.

In singles play, Thompson won for the fourth time in six matches as the Panthers' top seed. Freshman Charlie Werman remained unbeaten with a 6-0 record this spring with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win on the No. 4 court as the Panthers split the six matches: 3-up, 3-down.
