Men's tennis earns first SCIAC win 6-3 over Occidental

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Chapman University men's tennis team earned its first SCIAC victory of the year, defeating Occidental College 6-3 on Saturday at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club. The victory puts Chapman (6-10 overall, 1-3 SCIAC) in a tie for fifth place in conference standings.

The Panthers won two of three doubles matches as Chapman freshmen Charlie Werman and Sam Mittledorf took down Oxy's No. 2 pairing by a score of 8-4. Junior Justin Thompson and freshman Evan Valentine paired for an 8-4 victory over the No. 3 duo from Oxy.

In singles, Chapman won its first four matches of the day including sophomore No. 3 Brett Buford's second consecutive singles win, defeating Oxy's Eric Kazangian in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Troy Akin also won his second matchup in a row, beating the Tigers' Trevor Brown 6-1, 6-3. Both Buford and Akin have won five of their last seven singles matches. Werman (14-4) and Thompson (11-7) also won their singles matches, each winning in straight sets.

The Chapman men's tennis team has three remaining conference matchups before entering into SCIAC tournament play. The Panthers return to action Friday, April 11 in a SCIAC contest against Cal Lutheran, set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.
