Early exits spell Chapman tennis in Ojai

OJAI, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's tennis teams rounded out regular season play at the 114th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament over the weekend with just one player reaching the Round of 16.

In singles competition, Chapman junior Justin Thompson (12-11) led the way for the Panthers. After a first round bye, the No. 12-seeded Thompson defeated Cal Lutheran's Fergus Scott in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. However, Thompson was then eliminated in the Round of 16 by No. 3 seeded David Konstantinov of Whittier College.

The other two Panther men in competition won their first round matchups before losing in the Round of 32. Chapman's Charlie Werman (16-7) notched an opening round win over Garrett Deguchi of UC Santa Cruz 6-3, 6-4 and Brett Buford (14-9) took down Jonathan Kim of Pomona-Pitzer in straight sets as well 6-4, 6-4.

The Chapman women did not fare as well, all three competitors losing their first matchups. After first round byes, No. 7 seed Chapman sophomore Andrea Hammer (10-12) was upset by Arthi Padmanabhan of Pomona-Pitzer and junior Sophia Duong (18-4) was defeated by Crystal Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The loss snapped Duong's five-match winning streak. Panthers' senior Kelley Klebenow lost her first round matchup against Willamette's Denise Poltavski in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Chapman men's duo of Buford and senior Troy Akin won the Panthers' only doubles matchup, taking down Ruthikesh Joshi and Morgan Lebby of Caltech by a score of 8-1. However, they would be served defeat in the Round of 16 by Konstantinov and Chris Schommer of Whittier, 8-4. Chapman's second men's pairing of Werman and freshman Sam Mitteldorf lost their Round of 32 matchup to Jesse Knight and Ian Slater of Cal Lutheran.

Women's duo Duong and Klebenow took a first round bye into the Round of 16 where they were defeated by Pomona-Pitzer's Padmanabhan and Mae Coyiuto 6-4, 6-3.

The Chapman University women's tennis team takes on Redlands at Pomona-Pitzer on May 2 in the SCIAC Championships First Round. The men's tennis team will play in the SCIAC Championships First Round on May 2 as well against host Cal Lutheran, time to be determined.
