Thompson reaches consolation finals at Fall Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team earned mixed results as the Panthers sent five men to compete at the 2014 USTA/ITA Fall Regional Championships hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, Sept. 25-27.

Panthers' senior Justin Thompson and sophomore Charlie Werman each won their opening round singles matches before falling in the second round of the bracket. Thompson worked his way through the second round consolation draw and into the finals before eventually falling in a tough three-set match 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 to UC Santa Cruz's Chad Stone.

After falling in the first round, junior Brett Buford won two matches in the first round consolation bracket. Buford eventually lost in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-1 to Marko Mandic of Pomona-Pitzer.

In doubles action, freshman Justin Thompson and sophomore Sam Mittledorf won their first match 8-5 over Caltech pair Ruthwick Pathireddy and Sathwick Pathireddy, before falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' team of Warren Wood and Nikolas Marino 8-1. In the men's doubles consolation round senior Justin Thompson was joined by Buford before being knocked out in the second round by a pair from Whittier.
