Men's tennis defeats Hardin-Simmons for first win
ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team claimed its first victory of the year with an 8-1 win over visiting Hardin-Simmons. Chapman swept the doubles matches and narrowly missed a sweep of singles.
Senior Charlie Werman added on to his already school record for wins with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles. Freshman Darrus Lee also won in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4. Sophomore Igor Silva won by the same score at No. 5 and freshman Len Kamemoto was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 6.
Hardin-Simmons took the win in the top singles match with Alex Hunt winning in three sets to avoid the sweep. Freshman Eli Wiener battled back from a first set loss to win 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7).
The Panthers doubles teams outlasted the Cowboys in all three matches. Seniors Werman and Josh Sarsfield won 8-6 in the top match and sophomores Mathew Mead and Brock DeHaven won by the same score at No. 2. Lee and Kamemoto won 8-4 at No. 3.
The Panthers are back in action Wednesday when they Trinity (Conn.) at noon.
