Doubles sweep, Kamemoto clinches for first SCIAC win

COSTA MESA, Calif. – A sweep of the doubles matches led the Chapman University men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Caltech on Friday. Freshman Len Kamemoto clinched the match with a come-from-behind, three-set win.

The Panthers won their first SCIAC match on the strength of the sweep of all three doubles matches. Freshman Darrus Lee and sophomore Brock DeHaven breezed to an 8-2 win at No. 3. Kamemoto teamed up with senior Josh Sarsfield in the No. 2 match for an 8-5 win. Senior Charlie Werman and sophomore Mathew Mead battled to a 9-8 win in the No. 1 match to complete the doubles sweep.

Caltech turned the match around in singles portion of the match with three straight set wins in the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 matches but freshman Eli Wiener kept the Panthers on top with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.

Sarsfield and Derik Nguyen traded the first two set of the No. 2 match but Nguyen pulled out the 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Kamemoto dropped the first set in the No. 5 match after a tiebreaker was needed. However, he rebounded with a convincing win in the second set an edged Morgan Lebby in the third for the 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5 match-clinching win.

Chapman is back on the courts tomorrow at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center for its final home match of the season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3 p.m.
