Werman, Mead pull off upset against CMS

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Charlie Werman and sophomore Mathew Mead defeated the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the nation in the Chapman University men's team's 8-1 loss to third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Werman and Mead were playing just their second match of the season together at the top of the doubles when they lined up against the third-ranked doubles team in the country from CMS. The Panthers' duo won its first match against Caltech in a tiebreaker but rolled to an 8-4 win over Julian Gordy and Daniel Morkovine of CMS. The CMS pair was previously undefeated in the SCIAC.

Despite the big win at No. 1 doubles, Chapman did not grab the team victory. CMS won the next two doubles matches by the identical score of 8-2. The Stags won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Igor Silva forced a third set with a win in the second but lost in the super tiebreaker 6-1, 4-6 1-0 (10-4).

The Panthers finish up the regular season on the road with two more SCIAC matches at Occidental and at Cal Lutheran next week. Chapman will travel to Ojai before wrapping up the season at the SCIAC Tournament.
