DeHaven opens with win but men's tennis falls to Biola

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Brock DeHaven  captured a singles win in the season-opener but the Chapman University men's tennis team fell 8-1 to Division II Biola on Tuesday. The Panthers had three freshmen in the starting lineup, including two of the three top singles spots and the top doubles team.

After sweeping the doubles, Biola qiuickly clinched the team win with a pair of 6-1, 6-1 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. The Eagle also took the No. 5 and No. 6 matches with senior Rasmus Helms falling narrowly in the first set 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.

DeHaven battled to a first set win at No. 4 but fell quickly in the second set. With the match already decided, the match went into an abbreviated third set. DeHaven fell behind early but came back in the tiebreaker with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) win.

In the No. 1 singles match, freshman Jacob Lee looked impressive in his debut. He took the first set and was up in the second but ultimately fell 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-3) in the longest match of the afternoon.

The Panthers are back in action on Sunday when they welcome Colorado College to the new Lastinger Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
