Men's tennis falls to Hope International in 2019 opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team fell to Hope International University in their first match of the season on Saturday. The Panthers began their game in high spirits with a 2-1 lead in doubles but ultimately lost to the Royals 3-6.

Sophomore Jacob Lee and Senior Brock DeHaven won their doubles match with a score of 8-6. Freshmen duo Adrien Rooney and Luke Bennett also won their match with a final score of 8-7 after winning their tiebreaker 7-5.

Junior Len Kamemoto secured the only Chapman win in the singles category. Kamemoto won his first set 7-6 with a tiebreaker, and after losing his second set 4-6, he won the final tiebreaker 10-6 and earned the win against James Zhang of Hope International.

Despite no other wins in the singles competition, the team had several close matches, including a three-set loss for senior Matthew Mead.

After losing his first set 3-6, Mead came back to win his second set 6-3, but eventually fell 3-6 to his opponent Jayke Ancheta in the third set. Rooney also held his own against his opponent, but ultimately lost his two matches 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3 match.

The men's team now has a month-long break to train and recover before facing Christopher Newport University at home on Thursday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m.
