Rooney ends season with consolation title at Ojai

OJAI, Calif. – Freshman Adrien Rooney finished off his first collegiate season with the consolation singles title at the Ojai Tournament. Rooney won all four of his matches in the consolation bracket in straight sets to win the title.

Rooney had a tough opening draw as he faced eventual tournament champion Nikolai Parodi in the opening round. After a tough 6-3, 6-2 loss, Rooney breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win in his first consolation match. He went on to defeat Whittier's Matthew Yanuck 6-3, 6-2 and Redlands' Brad Cummins 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the championship round.

He took on Southwestern's Dean Dulthumonn in the championship match and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win to win the consolation title.

Junior Len Kamemoto and senior Igor Belineli also competed in the singles competition but both went 0-2. Belineli advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after his Round of 16 opponent withdrew.

Senior Matthew Mead competed in the Independent bracket and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 win.He fell 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to end his singles career.

Kamemoto and Rooney went 0-2 in the doubles bracket while the seniors Mead and Belineli fell 6-4, 6-3 in their first match in the Independent bracket.

Rooney ended his freshman season with a team-leading 16-8 singles record – the sixth-most wins in a single season in Chapman's Division III history.
