Men's tennis opens 2020 season on Wednesday

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team opens their 2020 season Wednesday with a home match against Marymount. The Panthers will hope to use their experienced returning players, as well as a group of talented newcomers, to work their way up the SCIAC standings.

The Panthers will again be facing one of the toughest schedules in the nation due to their incredibly difficult conference slate. Last season, the SCIAC saw five individuals make the NCAA singles bracket, and SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps went on to finish as runner-up in the team tournament.

Though Chapman finished last in the SCIAC last season, they did finish with a 7-5 nonconference record. In a preseason poll of the SCIAC coaches, the Panthers were projected to finish in seventh place ahead of Whittier. 

Chapman will be led by senior Len Kamemoto, junior Jacob Lee, and sophomore Adrien Rooney, as they look to climb the ranks of the SCIAC.

Kamemoto and Lee each got experience in the No. 1 position last season, with Kamemoto earning a win in tournament play as well. Lee was a perfect 4-0 as the No. 3.

Though he never saw action as a No. 1, Rooney had the best record on the team at 16-8 overall. He was 5-4 as No. 2 and 5-2 as No. 3, and also recorded a 5-2 record in tournaments.

Freshman Caleb Wilkins leads a class of six freshmen who will look to immediately impact the Panthers lineup.

Throughout February and March, all of Chapman's tennis matches will be played at home. The Panthers season officially opens on Wednesday at 1 p.m. when they take on Marymount at the Lastinger Tennis Center.
