Wilkins, Sanseverino lead men's tennis at fall tournament

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Caleb Wilkins won his consolation bracket to highlight the weekend for the Chapman University men's tennis team at the ITA Division III West Regional. Freshman Julien Sanseverino advanced to the finals of another flight.

After a pair of tough matches to open the tournament, Wilkins dominated the top flights back draw in the later rounds to win the consolation bracket. He dropped his first match and pulled out a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) win in his first consolation match to advance to the quarterfinals.

Wilkins overcame a first set loss in the quarterfinal match to win 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6). He breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the semifinals before capturing the consolation final with a 6-2, 6-1 win.

Sanseverino made his Chapman debut with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the first round of Flight C. He followed it up with a 6-4, 6-3 win to advance into the quarterfinals. After his quarterfinal opponent withdrew, he took another straight set victory to advance to the finals. He fell 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

Freshman Tommy Hays also won his first match at Chapman in Flight C. In the second round, he captured a the first set 6-3 before his opponent retired with an injury. Another injury withdrawal put him in the seimfinals. He took the second set and looked headed for an all-Chapman Flight C final. However, he fell 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Junior Josh Blinder, senior Harry Cohen and freshman Kameron DeHart all went 1-1 in singles.

The ITA Regional is the only fall competition for the Panthers, who return for the dual season in the spring.
