Overtime goal downs Panthers

ORANGE, Calif. - Just seconds into sudden-death overtime, the Chapman University men's water polo team surrendered the game-winning breakaway goal to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore driver Andrew Cosentino giving the Stags an 8-7 win on Saturday night at the Allred Aquatics Center.

Trailing by two goals at the beginning of the second overtime, Chapman (13-9) tied the game on goals by freshman utility Pierre Masson and the other by sophomore driver Brad Aills forcing a sudden death period. Mason's goal came with just over one minute remaining in the period.

After several lead changes and the score tied 3-3 at halftime, the Panthers took a 5-4 lead with two minutes remaining in regulation on a back-handed goal by Masson but were unable to hold it as Cosentino scored on a five meter shot to force the first overtime. Cosentino finished his night with a game-high five goals.

For the Panthers, tonight's loss was their second in a row and fourth loss in five games. Claremont (6-14) and Chapman played earlier this season, a game in which the Panthers won 14-8. With a win on Wednesday at home against Redlands, Chapman would tie the school record for wins in a season (14) which was set in 2001.
