No. 1-ranked Redlands hands Chapman third straight defeat

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University men's water polo team had upset in mind as they welcomed Division III's top-ranked University of Redlands to Allred Aquatics Center but the Bulldogs lived up to their billing as they defeated the Panthers 12-7 on Wednesday afternoon.

Redlands led 6-0 at halftime and scored the first seven goals of the game before sophomore driver Brad Aills scored the first Panther goal of the game in the third quarter. The Bulldogs led by as many as nine early in the fourth quarter before a flurry of Chapman goals narrowed the score to 10-4 with five minutes to play. Chapman outscored Redlands 6-2 in the final quarter but the early deficit was too much to overcome as Redlands held on to win 12-7.

Three of Chapman's six fourth quarter goals came from junior 2-meter Austin McElvaney, two from freshman utility Jake Ediger and one from freshman utility Pierre Masson.

Sophomore defender Andrew Smith-Jones led the offensive attack for the Bulldogs with three goals a trio of Redlands' players all chipped in two goals apiece: Andrew Becskehazy, Brendan Meaney and Jim Kehrig.

Chapman has now lost three games in a row but with a win on Saturday against U.C. Santa Cruz, the Panthers will tie the school record of 14 wins in a season. Chapman and Redlands played each other earlier this season in Redlands with the Bulldogs prevailing 12-8.
