Panthers fall in WWPA opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Chapman University men's water polo team fell behind early and never recovered, dropping its Western Water Polo Association championships tournament opener to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 10-6 in Claremont on Friday morning. Chapman, seeded No. 9 in the tournament, will face No. 6 Air Force (Colo.) on Saturday at 9:45 a.m.

No. 8 seed Pomona-Pitzer scored three goals in 1:12 at the end of the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Chapman (14-14) cut the lead to two goals in the third quarter, holding the Sagehens scoreless while junior utility Alex Mulé scored two of his three goals in the period to make the score 7-5.

However, Pomona (14-16) scored three more times in the final quarter to win going away. For the Sagehens, Ben Hadley and Ryan Balikian each scored three goals apiece.

Junior goalie Colin Gasper made 10 saves for Chapman.
