No. 11 UC San Diego drops Panthers 16-3
ORANGE, Calif. - In its first home game in over a month, the Chapman University men's water polo team fell behind by as many as 13 goals to No. 11 UC San Diego, en route to a 16-3 loss on Friday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center.
With UCSD leading by four scores in the first quarter, Chapman (7-9) got on the board with one second remaining in the quarter on a goal by sophomore utility Pierre Masson narrowing the score to 4-1. UCSD (7-7) then ran off seven-consecutive goals, building the lead to 11-1 by the end of the third quarter. Tritons' junior driver Ryan Allred and senior 2M Peter Gresham combined for five of the seven UCSD goals during that 7-0 run.
Down by 10 in the fourth quarter, Panthers' junior utility Stephen Neville and Masson scored consecutive goals within a minute of each other to make the score 12-3 which is as close as Chapman would get on the afternoon.
Senior utility Alex Mulé, the nation's leading scorer was held scoreless on six shot-attempts by the Tritons' defense. Junior driver Dominic Tornambe and senior 2M Austin McElvaney both tallied assists for the Panthers.
