Water polo takes down La Verne, Caltech, loses to Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team went 2-1 with wins against La Verne and Caltech before dropping a tough afternoon match against No. 4 Whittier College 12-9 on Saturday at the Allred Aquatics Center.

Whittier (3-6) has won the last four meetings with Chapman, last losing 11-3 in 2008.

With a 7-2 halftime lead against Whittier, it looked as if Chapman was going to end that streak Saturday. Chapman controlled the first half, in particular the second quarter, when they built their lead from 2-1 to the halftime score. Senior drivers Chase Parlee and Stephen Neville combined for five of the seven goals in the first half. Parlee finished the game with five scores and had 11 in two games on Saturday.

Then in the second half, Poets' freshman attacker Erick Gonzalez took over and scored the first three goals of the third quarter which narrowed the Panthers' lead to 7-5. In the fourth quarter, after the teams traded goals, Whittier ran off four-straight scores to take a 10-8 lead en route to the win. Gonzalez had two of the goals during the crucial fourth quarter run by the Poets and finished with a game-high eight scores. He had the first five scores of the game for Whittier. Junior utility Keary Schlactus also had a pair of important second half goals for Whittier.

Against Caltech (0-5), Chapman gave up the first goal of the game to sophomore utility Jack Blackwood but took over after that scoring the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead. After Caltech narrowed the score to 4-3 with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a goal by junior Adam Khan, Chapman scored 10-straight goals over the remainder of the first half to take a commanding lead en route to the 23-4 win. Chapman junior driver Jordan Randall led all scorers with four goals. A trio of new faces for Chapman also had a large impact as freshmen Jack Cutler and Brett Carter along with transfer David Carson each had three goals. In net, sophomore goalie Ryan Huffman had five blocks in his first start of the season.

In the morning match, Chapman scored three goals in the fourth quarter to a pull out a 13-9 over the University of La Verne (2-8). With a one goal lead heading into the fourth quarter Parlee and Neville put the game out of La Verne's reach as they combined to score the final three goals of the game. Parlee finished with a game-high six goals and two assists while Neville set the table for the offense with three scores and five assists. Sophomore goalie Taylor Roszkos had several big second half stops and tallied 13 for the game.
