La Verne win highlights weekend at UC Davis Tournament

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University men's water polo team earned a win over the University of La Verne and went 1-3 over the weekend at the Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis, but came up just short once again of pulling off a big upset against a Division I opponent.

Chapman (2-11) began the tournament on Saturday with a 12-9 loss to No. 18 Cal Baptist. Chapman led 7-6 in the third quarter after a goal by freshman utility Willis Allen. Cal Baptist then ran off four-straight goals to take command of the game and pull away for the win. Junior driver Dylan Trumbull had a team-high three goals in the game. Over the weekend, the junior tallied 10 goals, raising his season total from seven to 17. In the afternoon, Chapman topped La Verne 18-8 as Chapman led for the duration of the game. Trumbull, junior driver Jack Cutler and sophomore driver Mark Alvarado each had three goals for Chapman.

On Sunday, Chapman lost a 12-11 heartbreaker to 12th-ranked UC Davis who led throughout the game. Davis led by as many as three goals at 7-4 with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter after a score by Chris Richardson. Chapman then ran off three-straight scores to even the game at 7-7 with 1:25 remaining in the third quarter after a goal by Alvarado to make a game of it. Davis answered with two goals to take the lead for good and pull out the win. Senior goalie Taylor Roszkos had 13 saves in the game, his best outing of the weekend.

Santa Clara capped off the tournament by defeating Chapman 12-9 on Sunday afternoon. Santa Clara built a 4-0 second quarter lead and led by as many as seven scores en route to the win. Cutler led the team with three goals against Santa Clara.

Chapman returns to play on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Cal Baptist Tournament with games against Riverside City College and Fresno Pacific before coming home on Wednesday, Oct. 3 to host Claremont in Chapman's home-opener at 4 p.m.
