Alvarado leads water polo to 3-1 weekend at Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team went 3-1 over the weekend at the Gary Troyer Tournament with wins over Fresno Pacific, Mercyhurst and Penn State Behrend, and have now won four of its last six games overall. The Panthers were led by the strong all-around play of sophomore driver Mark Alvarado who had a team-high 12 goals to go along with 14 steals, six assists and three earned ejections.

Chapman (6-13) began the tournament with a 12-7 win over Fresno Pacific. Both junior driver James Vigeant and freshman utility Garrett Aanestad led the way for Chapman with three goals apiece while senior goalie Taylor Roszkos had eight blocks in net. Chapman then wrapped up the first day of the tournament with a 17-11 win over Mercyhurst. Alvarado had four goals, three assists and three steals while junior utility Brett Carter also added four scores. Roszkos had 15 saves in net, a weekend high for the senior.

On Saturday Chapman split its two games, winning 20-8 over Penn State Behrend before dropping its tournament finale 15-14 to George Washington. Against Penn State Behrend, Vigeant had a team-high three scores for Chapman while freshmen goalies Stephen Neil and Luke Graffis split time in net recording four blocks and six blocks, respectively.

Against George Washington to close out the tournament, Alvarado led the way with five goals and five assists. Chapman returns to the pool on Wednesday, Oct. 10 on the road against Caltech at 4 p.m. The team's next home game is on Wednesday, Oct. 17 against the University of La Verne at 4 p.m.
