Chapman earns season sweep over Concordia for sixth win in a row

ORANGE, Calif. – Six goals in the second quarter turned the game around for the Chapman University men's water polo team, which propelled the Panthers to a 12-9 win over visiting Concordia University in a non-conference battle between a pair of teams on the cusp of the national top-20 rankings. The win was the sixth straight for Chapman, which begins SCIAC play next Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

Chapman (9-7) turned a 5-3 deficit early in the second quarter into an 11-6 lead in the third thanks to an 8-1 rally that included five unanswered goals. Senior utility Jake Gross sparked the comeback with a pair of goals in the second quarter, two of his three in the game. Senior driver Dor Apffel and junior utility Willis Allen also scored three goals in the match to lead the Panther offense.

Junior goalie Stephen Neil was outstanding for Chapman in the win, making 12 saves. Concordia (6-8) had jumped out to a 4-2 lead, but were held scoreless by the Panthers for nearly nine minutes during the second and third periods.

The Panthers swept the season series from Concordia, defeating them twice this season. The first win, when the Eagles were ranked No. 18 in the national poll, boosted Chapman to a No. 2 ranking in the Division III polls. Both teams entered today's game among teams receiving votes in the national rankings.
