Alvarado, Gross named to All-SCIAC water polo team
ORANGE, Calif.– The Chapman University men's water polo team had two players selected to the All-Conference team in an announcement made by the SCIAC office on Wednesday. Senior utility Jake Gross and senior driver Mark Alvarado were named to the All-SCIAC men's water polo first and second teams, respectively.
Alvarado, who earned his second-straight selection, received first team recognition after leading the Panthers with 65 goals and 56 assists in 26 games. The senior finished his Chapman career ranking fourth in goals (205) and had a career-high of six goals against Iona College on Oct. 3. Additionally, the driver tied Austin McElvaney (2006-09) for most career assists (184) in Chapman history. Alvarado also ranks second in shots (524) and third in steals (240).
The other half of Chapman's dynamic duo is Gross, who earned second team honors in recognition for his defensive skills. The senior paced the Panthers with 80 steals. Gross ranked second on the team this season with 37 assists and 42 goals. During the SCIAC-Semi's on Nov. 22, the senior had a career-best of five goals and five steals in the Panthers' match with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Gross finished his career ranking sixth in Chapman history with 155 steals.
The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
