Men's water polo pair earns All-America honors
ORANGE, Calif.– A pair of Chapman University men's water polo All-Conference selections have now been named to the 2014 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Team in an announcement made Tuesday. Senior driver Mark Alvarado and senior utility Jake Gross, who earned All-SCIAC recognition in December, received the honors after leading the Panthers to a school-record 17 wins and No. 3 Division III ranking.
This marks the seventh straight season and the eighth time in school history the Panthers have had two or more athletes recognized on the ACWPC All-America team.
Alvarado was named to the All-America team for a third time – one of just four Panthers to earn the award three times or more in their career. He earned Second Team honors as Chapman's top playmaker, leading the Panthers in both goals (65) and assists (56) and ranking second in steals (69). Additionally, he finished his career ranked in the top-five in school history in all three aforementioned categories, including placing tied for first in career assists with 184.
Meanwhile, Gross finished second on the team with 42 goals and 37 assists and led the Panthers with 80 steals and earned honorable mention for the first time in his career.
The ACWPC is comprised of college coaches from all over the country with a goal to promote the development and advancement of collegiate water polo. The members of the association vote to recognize players annually for their achievements in and out of the pool.
