Men's water polo starts 2016 with win over Oxy

The Chapman University men's water polo team opened its season on Saturday with a solid showing of two wins at the Whittier College Tournament. Newcomer Ivo Ivanis led the Panthers with three goals in the first three matches.

Game 1: Chapman 11, Occidental 8

After defeating Grossmont JC in an exhibition match, Christopher Garau, Ivo Ivanis and Brady Hoskins led the team in scoring with two goals each to propel the Panthers to an 11-8 victory over SCIAC foe Occidental in a non-conference matchup. Garau also led the squad with two assists, with senior Corey Plaster joining him with another pair of assists. Garau also led the team with four steals. Senior goalkeeper Ian Decker played the first two quarters, recording four block. Freshman Ivan Shikhelman took over in the goal in the third and fourth quarters, allowing only three goals while making four saves.

Game 2: No. 5 Stanford 18, Chapman 1

The Panthers netted one goal in their 18-1 loss against the fifth-ranked Division I Cardinal. After three attempts, Ivanis scored the Panthers' goal off an assist from Hoskins.

Game 3: No. 1 UCLA 20, Chapman 2

Chapman ended its opening weekend against UCLA, the nation's top-ranked team, falling short in a 20-2 loss. Freshmen Nathaniel Fernandez and Peter Dales netted one goal each in the match. Dales assisted on Fernandez's goal and scored on an assist from junior Louis Campbell. The Panthers head to the Inland Empire Classic at La Verne on Saturday to take on two more Division I opponents in Pepperdine and Long Beach St.
